The rare Lakeside Daisy is beginning to bloom unusually early this year in the Heritage Garden. Typically peaking in late April to mid-May, the early emergence is likely tied to a warmer-than-average early spring, allowing the shallow limestone alvar habitat to warm more quickly than usual.

At this early stage, only some plants are beginning to open while many others remain in tight bud form close to the rocky ground. The first bright yellow blooms contrast against the exposed limestone, offering an early glimpse of the “golden blanket” that will develop as more flowers emerge in the coming weeks. These hardy native wildflowers thrive in thin soils and full sun, conditions unique to the Lake Erie limestone landscape of Ohio.
